Jason, animal rescuer:
To most people, they are 29 cents a pound, but to me, that’s a sacred life, that’s a friend. And I always think to myself when I see people standing in a deli, if they could have the experience that we’ve had, would they be there?

Cheri, former dairy farmer:
It was during the selling of the babies that Jim and I began having these deep feelings of, this just wasn’t right, because the babies that we were so close to, suddenly we were weighing them and then they would be flipped on their back and hogtied...

Jim, former dairy farmer:
I got attached to them a lot. Some we would even name and stuff, and we shouldn't have. They were like our little kids almost.

Harold, former beef farmer:
It’s like you innately know that this is not right, otherwise I wouldn’t feel so bad about it, I wouldn’t feel so sad. And if it was righteous, if it was a truly good thing, it would be a joyful thing. But I've never known anybody that slaughters animals that finds it a joyful thing.

Howard, former beef farmer:
It's a sight that's in my mind that I will never forget. And I never again in my life wanted to be a part of something that took the life out of anything.

Willow Jeane, former beef farmer:
People in the community called Howard a turncoat. How could a rancher do such a thing? But you’ve got to set your mind to doing what you know is right. And that’s what we did.

Cayce, humane officer and animal rescuer:
To know that that one individual's life was made better by my intervention,  that the suffering that one individual had to endure was alleviated because of my action, that makes all the difference in the world. At least to them.

Cheri and Jim today:
We’ve come full circle. We’re getting back to the basics, love and nurturing and letting the animals share the land with us.

Harold today:
I’m not saying that I’ve got it all figured out. But I can tell you that I have greater peace in my life than I’ve ever had. And to me that’s what life’s about. I mean, at the core of every human being and every sentient being, all we want is peace. And love.
